A Final “Live” Concert to End the Year and Bid Mr. Fabrizio Farewell
Energy once again filled the West Essex High School Auditorium on May 25, 2021, as students and parents gathered in that venue for the first time in more than a year to enjoy live music performed by the Concert Band and Symphonic Winds, and – via livestream from the Gymnasium – the Jazz Band and Jazz Quintet.
An extended ovation was given to Mr. Fabrizio, at what was his final concert with West Essex. The students, led by Michael Ragusa and Tiana Pimentel, presented Mr. Fabrizio a beautiful plaque with a touching inscription that included a quote by Mr. Fabrizo’s own friend and mentor, the late Dr. Joel Craig Davis: “You Get Back What You Put In”. That truth was evident on the stage Tuesday night. Notably, this year’s Senior Class started and ended their time at West Essex alongside Mr. Fabrizio.
Outgoing and incoming WEBB Presidents, Anthony Fermo and Heidi Levine, reflected on Mr. Fabrizio’s contributions to the program during his six years at West Essex, which included numerous awards, accolades, and that near-performance at Carnegie Hall. Mr. Fabrizio shared his own reflections of his time at West Essex, the students, administration and parents.
We congratulate all of the students, our Seniors, and Mr. Fabrizio for persevering during a challenging year, and delivering a memorable Spring Concert performance.
We thank Mr. Fabrizio for being such an inspirational educator, mentor and friend to so many.

Indoor Percussion and Winter Guard Wrap Up The Season
It was great to once again watch our kids perform live during the season-ending Family & Friends performance for both the Indoor Percussion and Winter Guard ensembles.
Held in the gymnasium and socially distanced, we celebrated the students’ dedication and talent throughout a challenging year, and further celebrated our senior students from both ensembles who demonstrated particular leadership during these unconventional times.
We also congratulate Ms. McAloon, Mr. Bouvier and the Indoor Percussion ensemble for achieving an “Outstanding” rating for their final competition of the season!
In lieu of season-end celebrations, the West Essex Band Boosters provided a “goodie bag” full of treats for each performer to take home after the performance. We thank Ms. Swanick, Mr. Fabrizio and all instructors for their hard work and dedication to our students over the past several months, and we look forward to next season!

There is one more competition remaining for the 2021 season, and we wish the Indoor Percussion ensemble the best of luck!

Arts Education NJ Solo and Ensemble Festival
WEBB Congratulates the following students who entered the inaugural Arts Education NJ Solo and Ensemble Festival last month and represented the West Essex Bands extremely well.
According to Mr. Fabrizio’s recent email, there were over 1,000 entries from all over the state and our WE students worked hard to practice and record themselves for the event. Each student received a score, rating, and recorded feedback from professional independent adjudicators from around the United States. Gabriel Ruszala (12th) scored among the top musicians who were invited to State Finals later in the year.

Senior Knights & Parents Celebrated
Marching Knights impress at the Friends & Family Performance
The 2020 Marching Season came to a close with a memorable Friends & Family Performance on Sunday November 22, 2020. A crisp autumn day served as the backdrop as the Marching Knights and the West Essex Varsity Dance Team took to the turf for their final performances of the season.
Senior Knights and their parents were celebrated on-field, in a fitting tribute to student leaders in what was a most unusual and challenging season. From limited practices, to in-town Band Camp, to a virtual competition season, our Knights rose to the occasion and delivered. The West Essex Band Boosters could not be more proud of you.
Senior Posters are signed after Friday night football
In what has become tradition, Senior Banners were signed by band members after Friday night’s football game: a keepsake reflecting many fond memories of their years as Marching Knights.
WEBB congratulates the students, Mr. Fabrizio, and the entire staff for overcoming what seemed to be insurmountable challenges a few months ago. We thank you for creating new memories in an already memorable year.

Knights Represented Well in Rowan University’s Windfest 2020
Congratulations to the four West Essex Band Students who participated in Rowan University’s Windfest Honor Band 2020 during the weekend of October 31 and November 1.
Clockwise from top left: James Humphrey, Gianna Lodato, Logan Bogumil, Andrew Marino
The students – James Humphrey (Junior, Bass Clarinet), Andrew Marino (Junior, Mallets), Gianna Lodato (Sophomore, Percussion) and Logan Bogumil (Sophomore, Clarinet) – participated remotely over the two day event, which included clinics, rehearsals, and then a final recording, which will be prepared for a virtual concert later this year. The event was held under the direction of Conductor, Dr. Joseph Higgins and the Rowan University Band Faculty.
During the weekend, the students also participated in instrumental sectionals, as well as engaged in an interactive workshop with composer Nicole Piunno.
“The Rowan Windfest was a great opportunity for our students to participate in an Honor Band and continue to get high quality musical experiences despite the cancellation of many of our annual state-run events,” said West Essex Band Director Mr. Fabrizio. “Rowan has a strong music department and they facilitated an opportunity for excellent high school musicians to stay connected. James, Andrew, Gianna, and Logan are all strong performers in the Honors Level of Symphonic Winds this year. They are also some of the many West Essex students who have auditioned and have been accepted into New Jersey’s Area, Region, and/or All-State Band in the past.”
Congratulations to all!
